Take the procedure a physician uses when he makes a diagnosis. When certain features, observed in a patient’s appearance, behavior, or reports, are recognized as the characteristic symptoms of a particular disorder, it is the outcome of an interpretation. And this interpretation is possible only on the basis of the conceptual structures the physician has built up in his or her own experience – experience that may have been gained by interpreting the language in medical books, by interpreting tests, and by interpreting the treatment of prior patients.
